A vape may receive a light splash, have a drink spilled over it, or fall completely into water. These are not equivalent events, but the presence of a lithium-ion battery and electronic circuitry means that powering or charging the device immediately is not a safe way to test it.
A dry exterior does not prove that the inside, charging port, circuit board or battery is dry and undamaged. The correct first response is therefore to stop use, prevent charging and consult the instructions for the exact model instead of relying on a universal waiting period.

If a vape gets wet, stop using it and do not connect it to a charger. Power it off only if this can be done safely. Remove the pod or a user-removable battery only when the device design and instructions allow it and there is no heat, swelling, smoke, leakage or unusual noise.
Wipe the outside with a dry cloth and keep the device in a dry, safe location away from combustible materials. If it was submerged, liquid entered the charging port, or any damage sign appears, do not test it by powering or charging it. Why can water cause a problem inside a vape?
A rechargeable device normally contains a lithium-ion battery, control circuitry, a charging port and electrical contacts. Does water resistance mean the device is always safe?
No. Some models carry a specific water-resistance rating, but test limits vary by model, depth, exposure time and the condition of covers, seals and ports. What should you do immediately after the device gets wet?
- Stop using it immediately: do not press the activation button or take a draw to check whether it still works.

Stop and move away if a danger sign appears

Move away from the device. If smoke or flames appear, leave the area and contact local emergency services. Do not attempt to fight a battery fire yourself or return to retrieve the device.
Can the device be used once it looks dry?
A dry surface is not enough to make that decision. It depends on the amount of exposure, the type of liquid, the device design, any applicable water-resistance rating and the exact model instructions. Do not test a submerged device by connecting it to a charger; charging is not a drying test.
Device with a built-in battery
Do not open the housing to reach the battery. If the device was submerged, liquid entered the charging port, it activated by itself, or it shows an error or unusual heat, keep it out of use and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider about inspection or replacement.
Device with a removable battery
Do not reinstall a cell that was submerged or shows corrosion, sleeve damage or damage to the terminal insulator. Keep it by itself in a non-conductive case, away from keys, coins and other batteries. Drying methods not to rely on
- A hair dryer, heater or direct sunlight: external heat can warm the battery and damage seals or components.
- An oven or microwave: never place a battery-powered device in heating equipment.
- Compressed air: it may drive liquid further into openings instead of removing it.
- Metal or another tool in the charging port: this can damage contacts or cause a short circuit.
- Rice as a safety clearance: even if the device looks dry after being placed near an absorbent material, this does not reveal corrosion or internal damage and does not prove charging is safe.
- Repeated testing: do not press the activation button or connect a charger periodically to see whether it has recovered.
Exterior drying is only an initial precaution; it does not repair a battery or circuit board.
What about the pod and e-liquid after water exposure?
If droplets only reached the outside of a closed pod and did not enter the mouthpiece, airflow path or filling opening, detach it, wipe the exterior and follow its cleaning instructions. If water, a drink or salt water mixed with the liquid inside the pod, or contamination cannot be ruled out, do not use the contents.
Do not rinse a pod containing nicotine e-liquid into a sink. Keep it closed and away from children and pets until you confirm the appropriate local disposal route. If nicotine e-liquid reaches the skin, wash the area with soap and water and follow local health guidance if symptoms develop or ingestion or eye exposure occurs.
If the moisture came from an internal pod leak rather than external water, stop using the device as well. E-liquid can reach the contacts, charging port or circuit board.
When is responsible disposal the appropriate route?
Arrange inspection, replacement or responsible disposal when the device was submerged, internal dryness cannot be confirmed, or it develops corrosion, heat, swelling, unintended activation or recurring faults. Do not place a vape or lithium-ion battery in household trash or a general recycling bin.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains that lithium batteries in vapes can cause fires when damaged in the waste stream and recommends taking devices to a household hazardous-waste collection site or another suitable local program. Acceptance rules vary, so contact the facility before transporting a wet device or suspected damaged battery and ask about packaging and transport requirements.
