A glove compartment or car boot may seem like a convenient place to keep a vape and nicotine e-liquid during daily travel. A parked vehicle, however, is not a temperature-controlled storage space, and its interior can change temperature quickly even when the vehicle is in the shade.
This guide explains why the device and liquid should leave the car with you, how to organise them for temporary transport, and what to check if they were forgotten in very hot or cold conditions. It does not set one universal storage temperature because limits vary by device, battery and liquid; always follow the instructions for the products you have.
Short answer
Do not use a parked car to store a vape device, its batteries or nicotine e-liquid. Take them with you when leaving the vehicle and store them indoors at a moderate temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat sources, in a secure place that children and pets cannot reach.
For transport only, switch the device off and place it in a protective case, isolate every loose battery in a non-conductive battery case, and keep the original e-liquid bottle closed inside a sealed secondary bag. At your destination, do not leave the organiser on a seat, dashboard, glove compartment or in the boot.
Why does a parked car change temperature so quickly?
Vehicle surfaces and the interior absorb energy from sunlight while closed windows and doors limit the release of heat. The outside air temperature therefore does not represent the conditions experienced by items inside the vehicle.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explains that parking in the shade or lowering the windows slightly does little to change the interior temperature. Its guidance is primarily about preventing heatstroke, but it also shows why a parked vehicle cannot be treated as a stable storage environment.
Cold weather does not turn a car into suitable storage either. A battery and liquid can experience a sharp transition between a cold vehicle and a heated indoor space. The correct limits come from the device manual, battery markings and liquid-bottle instructions, not from estimating cabin temperature by touch.
What can extreme temperatures mean for the device and battery?
The US Food and Drug Administration advises protecting a vape from extreme temperatures. Its guidance specifically says not to leave a device in direct sunlight, in a car on a hot summer day or on a freezing night, and not to charge it at extreme temperatures.
The London Fire Brigade similarly warns that direct sunlight or freezing temperatures can damage a battery and advises stopping use immediately if a battery becomes unusually hot, begins to bulge or starts hissing.
This does not mean every brief exposure will cause visible damage. It means a vehicle is an unsuitable place to rely on for storage. There is also no single duration that is safe in every car: weather, sunlight, vehicle position and colour, exposure time and battery design all affect the result.
What about nicotine e-liquid?
E-liquid does not present the same electrical risk as a battery, but it still requires controlled storage. Heat, light and air can accelerate changes in the liquid over time, which is why storage guidance published by Innokin recommends keeping it in a cool, dark place away from heat and light.
A vehicle also does not provide a consistent guarantee that a bottle will remain inaccessible to children or pets, and a leak can contaminate interior surfaces. Keep e-liquid in its tightly closed original bottle and do not treat a glove compartment or car boot as long-term storage.

How can you transport them without using the car as storage?
If transport is necessary, prepare one organised case and remove it from the car as soon as the journey ends:

An organised case protects the items during transport and should leave the car with you at the destination.
- Switch the device fully off: use the shutdown or locking method in its manual and do not leave the activation control exposed to pressure inside a bag.
- Use a protective case: secure the device in a compartment that protects it from impact and compression rather than allowing it to roll on a seat or the vehicle floor.
- Isolate loose batteries: place every removable battery in a non-conductive battery case and keep it away from keys, coins and other metal objects.
- Close the liquid securely: leave it in its original bottle, place the bottle in a sealed secondary bag and keep it upright where practical to limit the effect of a leak.
- Keep the case out of direct sun: while a responsible adult is in the car, place it in a stable, shaded position that children and pets cannot access and that does not interfere with driving.
- Take the case at the destination: do not delay because the stop seems brief, and do not assume that previous air-conditioning will keep the cabin within a suitable range after the vehicle is switched off.
If the device is hot or has changed shape
Do not use or connect a device to a charger while it is unusually hot. If it is swollen, cracked or leaking, produces an unusual odour, hisses or smokes, do not touch it and do not try to open it or cool it with water or ice.
Move away and keep other people away if this can be done without putting yourself at risk. Contact local emergency services if there is smoke or fire. Once the immediate danger has passed, follow the manufacturer’s and local authority’s instructions for responsible disposal instead of reusing a damaged device or battery.
What should you inspect after accidental exposure?
If the device is only warm and there is no immediate warning sign, leave it switched off on a clean, stable surface away from combustible materials and let it return naturally to room temperature before touching or evaluating it. Do not connect it to a charger for a quick test.
- Check the device body for swelling, cracks, distortion or separated parts.
- For a removable battery, inspect the wrapper and terminals without removing the wrapper or attempting a repair.
- Check the charging port for distortion or signs of leakage, and do not insert metal tools.
- Inspect the liquid bottle and cap. Do not use the contents if the bottle is deformed, the cap no longer seals or a leak is present.
- If heat persists, the device behaves unusually or its condition remains uncertain, keep it out of use and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
Frequently asked questions
Is a glove compartment or boot safer than a seat?
They may block direct sunlight, but they do not make a parked vehicle temperature-controlled. They can organise secured items during a drive; they are not storage locations after you leave the vehicle.
Is a slightly open window or shaded parking enough?
